Girls Lead Gwinnett at North Georgia Championships

JEFFERSON — Gwinnett cross country teams and athletes fared well Saturday in the North Georgia Championships at Lamar Murphy Park.

Leading the way were the Mill Creek girls, who won the Navy Division title in the 5K event, and Brookwood’s Kennedy Wardle, the individual champion in that division.

Mill Creek tallied 49 points to win the girls division, Brookwood was third at 122 and Archer took sixth at 146. Peachtree Ridge (ninth, 197) and Grayson (10th, 204) also finished in the top 10

Gia Hoang (seventh, 20 minutes, 30.94 seconds), Emi Hoang (ninth, 20:47.82), Lilly Kate Cropp (10th, 20:52.19), Ysabella Jimenez (13th, 21:26.84) and Carsyn Marzella (15th, 21:31.32) stood out in the Mill Creek girls’ title run.


Wardle won the championship in 19:45.95. She was backed up by teammates Emily Brown (eighth, 20:33.22) and Sophia Csehy (30th, 22:59.69).

Providence Christian’s Lauren Thomas was second in 19:57.13 and Archer’s Caroline Kutter was third in 20:03.55, giving Gwinnett a 1-2-3 finish in the girls individual race.

Archer also got nice runs from Steffie Lapin (12th, 21:13.00) and Symeon Summerville (14th, 21:27.66), while Peachtree Ridge’s Erika Wilson (20th, 22:06.71) and Grayson’s Ekhlas Shubbar (27th, 22:36.84) also finished in the top 30.

Mill Creek also paced Gwinnett in the boys team standings with 74 points, good for second behind Denmark’s 31. Brookwood (sixth, 166) and Archer (10th, 273) also finished in the top 10.

The Mill Creek boys were led by Tyler Cloer in ninth at 16:42.30, along with Dain Jacobazzi (17th, 17:07.72), Landen Settles (18th, 17:07.88), Paul Schlitz (19th, 17:08.57), Collin Cannon (21st, 17:10.75) and Joseph Lee (22nd, 17:12.45).

Brookwood’s top boys runners were Malcolm Phillips (23rd, 17:12.61) and Abraham Lopez Yax (26th, 17:15.06), and Archer’s Jacob Davis was 27th in 17:19.63.
